What makes this growing location so special is that it uses a semi-closed greenhouse system in which the greenhouse operates as its own energy source. During the summer, the ventilation windows are kept closed in order to collect solar heat from the greenhouse and store it underground. During the winter, this heat can be pumped up to heat the closed greenhouse. This system greatly reduces the consumption of fossil fuels as well as CO2 emissions when tomatoes are being grown. By using this system, a closed greenhouse covering 3.4 hectares can provide itself with heat as well as heat a nearby tomato greenhouse not equipped with a closed greenhouse system. This is what Prominent means by running an energy-efficient business.
"Milieukeur" scheme
Since June 2014, Prominent Groeneweg II has been satisfying the criteria set by the “Milieukeur” scheme that stipulates that a company’s sustainability policies and various environmentally protective measures must be transparently guaranteed.
